Good For Jay Wheeler

Insensitive? No, Florida school board member Jay Wheeler is right on in telling parents that the reason they can't afford school uniforms for their children is because they are wasting too much on cable TV, alcohol, and cigarettes. And people do -- for which they should be ashamed. It's about time someone told them so.

I work with the Dept of Social Welfare Services in Atlanta. Every day I see people coming to collect welfare, food stamps, various assistance with their cigarettes, MP3 players and cell phones. Many of them do not want to work, but they demand taxpayer funded support while spending money on non-essentials. Probably 100% drink alcohol. They live completely irresponsible lives and demand taxpayer money to fund their lifestyle. And in Atlanta, you cannot question any of their decision making. You will be fired!

It's because of this sort of thing that my wife quit social work (well, she didn't quit entirely -- she became a bilingual Kindergarten teacher). Personally, I think that if I am giving anyone money, I have some say in how it's to be spent. And if the recipient doesn't like my rules, they don't get my money.

You are foolish to take anything that guy says at face value. He wants to help no one but himself. His comments are insensitive at best and insulting at least. Yes there are people wasting money but there are also people who are doing all they can to support thier families. How do I know Wheeler is full of spit? I have known him since he was a small child. He scored below 800 on the SATs and flunked out of two colleges. He has been bankrupt at least two times and has had dozens of jobs over the years and has been fired from most of them. You are blind and dumb if you support this guy. The sad thing is he knows just what to say to get the support of fed up people every where. However you do a disservice to applaud him without doing any research. He is truly a viper and is not fit to hold any public office in my opinion. He is the worst kind of person there is. He does not care about any issue only furthering Jay Wheeler's agenda and he does not care who he hurts or defames. Find someone else to endorse he is a real loser.

I don't know the man, so I can't say anything about him one way or the other. He may be everything you say he is for all I know, but that doesn't mean he's not right about this. And that's what matters to me, that he's right about this. The issue is the issue, not the messenger.

I am sorry I can not agree with you. His message is one of hate and tarring all people with one brush. I agree with you that many people are not responsible and could cut out some things to pay for the uniforms. However there are plenty of people who work two jobs and still cannot make ends meet. The economy is not robust and jobs in his part of Florida are mostly minimum wage service jobs. With the price of gas, taxes and other expenses can you not see how this would be unfair to a family who is struggling now. Are you saying uniforms are more important than food or shelter? To lump them all together is degrading and insulting. Wheeler is too dumb to ever get this and will continue to put down hard working people at the bottom of the work force. I am in favor of uniforms in districts where it is deemed a needed change. I will NEVER be for the kind of crap that comes out of Wheeler's mouth. If you do not examine the messanger, the message will get lost and you will not get what you want in any event. Please remember a messenger named Joseph McCarthy. Many people thought his message was correct and look how many innocents were ruined by him and his false accusations. Given support by people like you who knows how far Wheeler can go and how much damage he can cause. Perhaps you can seperate the message from the messanger but I can not. Perhaps if you looked into his record and his crazy stances over the years you too would see he is dangerous. However I can lead a horse to water but I can not make him think. Good luck to you at least you actively support your ideals and that is more than most.

Even a stopped clock is right twice. My wife used to work as a social worker, and she said that maybe 5-10% of people on welfare needed help. The rest were abusing the system and were doing things that made themselves worse off. Sure, there may be a handful who do not fit into the category he placed people in, but when the vast majority do, it's not a bad thing to point it out and to at least try to shame that majority into doing what is right. We need to stop making excuses for people who are in the situations they are in because they made a series of bad choices, and continue to do so.
